Flappers, Conservativism and Changes in Fashion - 1103 Words

Since the early twentieth century, there have been many fads and changes in the fashion industry. From cloche hats in the early 1900s, to big hair in the 1980s and to the low rise of jeans of the present day fashion still continues to evolve with the way society changes. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines fashion as, a popular way of dressing at a particular time or among a particular group of people. Throughout history, fashion has been changing. Whether it is a group wanting to make a fashion statement, or a change in society’s views, there will always be something new. In the early twentieth century, society had a fairly conservative mindset on their views of clothing and their actions. Women’s fashion has become liberal as the years progressed because of the independence that women achieved. After the Women’s Rights movement and WWI, it became increasingly common to see women in the labor force. Women gained independence and wanted to rebel from societa l norms. This is evident of the flappers of the 1920s to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s. Society’s view on conservatism had changed throughout time. In the 1920s the flappers were viewed as more risquà © during their time. However, compared to the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s, the flappers were far from risquà ©. In the early twentieth century, people dressed very conservatively. Men wore slacks and collared shirts, while women wore dresses or skirts that extended well below the knees.
